Ethical Eating (by Human Fleur and Human Nena)

Falka G Dog and Cat Treats

Recently we met a lovely man, Richard Gilroy, who is passionate about ethical ingredients and produces a grain and additive free dog treat which he sells via his stalls at the Mt Claremont Farmers Markets (usually on a Saturday) and the Kalamunda Farmers Markets (usually on a Sunday). Although himself a vegetarian, Richard believes that dogs and cats are naturally omnivores and developed a recipe that satisfies both his ethics and the needs of his animal companions. The “Falka G” treats come in two varieties, (free range Mount Barker) chicken and (sustainable) kangaroo. As previously mentioned they are grain free, which make them perfect for dogs (and cats) with special dietary requirements, and also contain ground flaxseed, besan (chickpea flour), eggs (free range of course), herbs, vitamins and minerals. Dallas and his brother Texas sampled both varieties and the ensuing puddle of drool left on the floor indicated that the taste certainly lived up to the high standard of the ingredients. Richard can be contacted at rigfalk@gmail.com.

 Ethical Products

Where ever possible, Dallas likes to know that the cafes he visits choose to include ethical ingredients in their menu and top marks are given to those that comply. Perth, and Australia in General, are slowly adjusting their eating habits as their awareness of animal welfare increases. Many places now offer free range eggs and poultry, however, Perth appears not to have yet embraced the idea of free range pork products – although these are available. Following is a (developing) list of links to examples of these ethical items, which are available in most supermarkets:

Mount Barker Chicken

Jalna Yoghurt

KR Castlemaine

S&W Mayonnaise

Peter Singer’s book “The ethics of what we eat” increased the awareness of ethical eating and subsequently changed the habits of many people world-wide. This ABC Talking Heads interview condenses Peter’s principles and values.
